I just got done reading “Tribal Leadership” by Dave Logan and John King.
I had heard of Dave logan before and had seen his Ted talks video and finally read his book!
The book was awesome, I loved it and got a lot out of it. The main thing that I learned from the book was that there are 5 levels of tribes.
The following levels explain what the levels mean and what you want to do in order to move from level to level.
Level 1- Level one tribes are things like gangs and prisons. The level of these tribes is low because it’s all about “Life sucks” so what let’s get what we can while we are here. Morals, teamwork and consequence awareness are mostly nonexistent or they just don’t matter. Most workplace environments aren’t here but i’m sure there are a few!
Level 2- Level two tribes are all over the place, they are very common. If you have ever seen the movie “Office Space” you are familiar with level two. Level two is a bland and boring workplace where people hold cups that say “I’d rather be fishing” and things of that nature. At this level there is no motivation, inspiration or vision at all.
Level 3- Level three is all about you. This is a great example of salespeople or anyone who is all about THEIR accomplishments in a company. These people are all about “how awesome I am” and it’s all about me getting ahead and my awards/achievements.
Level 4- Level four is all about how awesome WE are. It’s all about teamwork and comradery. The level of teamwork is strong and if someone is missing it affects the group as a whole. It’s about building each other up and all succeeding together. The culture is strong and established here.
Level 5- Level five is all about the big picture, the dream, the vision. At this level it’s about accomplishing that goal and making that positive impact on the world. Everyone is inspired, motivated and is running at peak performance. Teamwork, vision and purpose are strong principles at this level. Companies that dip into level five are companies like apple and google.
The five levels of tribes was an amazing eye opener for me. I had never thought about the work environment and looking at them through “tribe eyes”! It is important to understand what level tribe your company is in because that allows you to see what the next level is… what to do and how to get there.
The thing that moves tribes from one level to the next is what’s called “tribe leaders”, these are the people who are leading the blind, leading the silent. There are always leaders in these tribes and the title doesn’t necessarily mean it’s them.
These tribe leaders need to be on the same page as you and evolve into the next level and the rest of the company will follow.
2 things that are very important to know when hiring tribe leaders or developing them.
Core values – Your core values are what’s important to you and what matters most when it’s broken down to the essence of it’s being. For me Love and Influence are core values of mine. For other people like eben pagan it’s evolution, for Dave Logan it’s Impact. We all have different core values and we all see the world differently.
It’s important to develop a culture like tony hsieh did at zappos.com and establish the core values so everyone is on the same page and more effective.
The second thing that I thought was real important was the persons personality/attitude type. The tribal leaders need to be positive inspired people that are open and willing to grow.
They need to master their own work, then master working with others in a team, then master building that vision and making it a reality.
It’s a process and it’s a progression that allows you to learn and grow but definitely worth it.
This book was amazing, I got so much out of it! The core values, the levels of tribes and learning about tribal leaders will be very valuable to me and my businesses from here on out.
I highly recommend it!
Pick it up and share this post!
Thanks!
David King
